This system grew out of the international subject index of the Institut Internationale du Bibliographie at Brussels, which in adopted the Dewey Decimal Classification. The UDC is peculiar in the sense that it consists of a combination of both enumerative and faceted character of the schemes and hence it is designated as an Almost-Faceted Scheme of Classification.

Universal Decimal Classification UDC is one of the most widely used classification schemes for all fields of knowledge. It is used in libraries, bibliographic, documentation and information services in over countries around the world and is published in over 40 languages.

The Universal Decimal Classification is a system of library classification developed by the Belgian bibliographers Paul Otlet and Henri La Fontaine at the end of the 19th century. It is based on the Dewey Decimal Classification, but uses auxiliary signs to indicate various special aspects of a subject and relationships between subjects.
